WHAT IS IXIARO®?

IXIARO® is a vaccine (inactivated, adsorbed) that helps protect against Japanese encephalitis (JE).1

It is the only licensed and recommended vaccine available in the UK to help protect travellers against JE.2

IXIARO® INDICATION

IXIARO® is indicated for active immunisation against Japanese encephalitis in adults, adolescents, children, and infants aged two months and older.1

IXIARO® should be considered for use in individuals at risk of exposure through travel or their occupation.1

IXIARO® CONTRAINDICATIONS

IXIARO® should not be administered to individuals with hypersensitivity to the active substance, any of the excipients, or to residual substance.1

Individuals who show hypersensitivity reactions after receiving the first dose of the vaccine should not be given the second dose.1

IXIARO® is not recommended for those who are pregnant or lactating.1

Administration should also be postponed in individuals with acute severe febrile illness.1

PRODUCT CHARACTERISTICS

IXIARO® is a purified and inactivated JEV vaccine. The virus is grown in Vero cells, purified, inactivated, and then adsorbed on aluminium hydroxide.1,4 The final vaccine is in the form of a suspension in a pre-filled syringe. Each unit dose of IXIARO® contains inactivated Japanese encephalitis virus strain SA14–14–2 (inactivated) 6 AU corresponding to a potency of ≤460 ng ED50.1

The vaccine does not contain any preservative or stabilisers.5

VACCINE STORAGE AND HANDLING

IXIARO® should be stored in a refrigerator at 2–8°C in its original packaging to protect from light.1

It has a shelf life of three years.1
